Living in a small home can be a challenge, but it does not mean you have to compromise on style or functionality. With the right small space solutions, you can make the most of your home and create a comfortable and inviting space that suits your needs.
In this article, we will be looking at a particular unit located at Stirling Residences in Queenstown. The team at Editor Interior managed to work alongside the client to come up with a smart and modern interior design that makes full use of the space provided. If you are looking for inspiration, this interior design may help in offering some ideas for maximising small spaces and turning them into cosy and functional homes.
Be creative with storage
Storage is a crucial element in any home, but it’s especially important in a small space where every inch counts. To make the most of your small home, be creative with your storage solutions, like what we have done in this apartment.
From wall-mounted shelves and built-in cabinets to hidden drawers, these storage options allow the homeowner to keep their belongings organised and out of the way, which is especially important as clutter can easily make the house feel smaller and messier.
Use multi-functional and flexible furnishings
In a small home, every piece of furnishing should serve a purpose. For those living in smaller homes, purchasing multi-functional furnishing or furniture that can be used for more than one purpose is a worthwhile investment. They are compact, flexible, and easy to maintain, making them perfect for saving space in your home.
In this unit, we observe this advice by purposefully designing a custom integrated staircase that connects to the TV feature wall. This provides not only additional storage but also makes full use of the corner spaces.
Another flexible furnishing we have installed is the loft ladder in the study area. Whenever the client wants to head up to the loft level, they can simply swing the ladder out, as depicted in the above photos. This unique feature helps to make the house feel more spacious by not obstructing the space.
Create zones
In a small home, it is important to create distinct zones for different activities. This can help maximise the functionality of the space and make it feel more organised.
Despite the small space, this apartment boasts high ceilings, so we decided to take advantage of the vertical space by installing a loft. This addition provides extra space for homeowners to create a cosy study nook fitted with rugs, shelving units, and comfortable furniture pieces.
We also made sure that the bedroom was allocated to a specific area by installing a glass sliding door. This is vital as the bedroom is meant for relaxation and mental repose, so it should be separated from work or socialising spaces of the house.
Embrace minimalism
Last but not least, do keep in mind that less is more when it comes to smaller homes. We recommend going with a minimalistic interior design and focusing on quality over quantity.
In this home, you will notice that the home features understated pieces of furniture, such as a minimalist coffee table and clean-looking shelf displays. Of course, we also added a few statement pieces, such as an interesting lighting fixture and artworks, to bring some life and personality to the home. Aside from that, all the furniture pieces are not too oversized and overpowering to the point that they will overwhelm the space.
Conclusion
Living in a small home does not have to be a challenge, and the tips provided are a testament to that. As long as you implement the right small space solutions, your home can feel spacious and comfortable, alongside meeting all your lifestyle needs.
